Explore SEQENS’s expertise of condensation reactions

About SEQENS Advanced Specialties

With more than 50 years of experience in scaling up and custom manufacturing of small molecules and polymers, SEQENS Advanced Specialties offers a continuum of expertise from the laboratory to industrial scale.

SEQENS Advanced Specialties develops custom solutions and ingredients for the most demanding industries such as electronics, aerospace, cosmetics, automotive, construction, paints and inks.

Thanks to an extensive experience through partnerships with leading companies, SEQENS Advanced Specialties is a European reference in industrialization of high value-added custom materials, granting reactivity, flexibility and reliability.

A strong expertise in condensation processes

Over the years SEQENS Advanced Specialties acquired a strong expertise in condensation processes such as esterification, acylation and polymerization. Condensation reaction is a combination of two molecules to form a single molecule. An alcohol is transformed into an ester by replacement of the alcoholic proton with a carboxylic group. Typically, the alcohol is deprotonated with a base, such as triethylamine, and the resulting alkoxide ion reacts with a carboxylic acid or an acid chloride (Figure 1) to form the ester.

The manufacturing of chloride-containing compounds and more specifically acid chlorides requires strong scientific expertise and specific equipment that are compatible with the “acidity and salinity” associated with those valuable compounds.

SEQENS has long lasting expertise in the industrial production of a wide variety of chloride-containing ingredients such as benzethonium chloride (used as preservative), undecylenoyl chloride (used as an intermediate in emulsifiers, anti-aging and whitening ingredients) or 2-methyl butyryl chloride (used as a perfuming agent in fragrances and personal care products). So, for condensation process based on acid chloride, SEQENS is also able to synthetize the starting material supplying a cost-effective solution to its customers.

VICURE 25 : a copolymerisable photoinitiator

SEQENS is the only source of some esters such as VICURE 25 (Benzoin Acrylate – Figure 2) in Europe.

Figure 2 – VICURE 25

VICURE 25 is a white crystalline solid used as a copolymerisable photoinitiator.

VICURE 25 is an efficient UV radical photoinitiator for polymerization and crosslinking of mono- and multi-functional unsaturated monomers (Figure 3).

VICURE 25 is a photoinitiators having a copolymerizable double bond with enhanced radical stability, improved photosensitivity and better compatibility in the formulation. It also has a high molecular weight, low volatility and reduced odor compared to benzoin alkyl ethers photoinitiators.

VICURE 25 is widely used for (meth) acrylate polymerization and can also be used for UV curable inks.
